karla homolka and paul bernardo

Paul Bernardo, was born on August 27, 1964 in Scarborough, Ontario and to anyone that was watching him from the outside he was a top class guy. However, what really lurked inside of Paul Bernardo was the mind of a serial killer and he took his beautiful blonde wife, Karla Homolka down the path of crime and murder.

Paul Bernardo's first known crimes took place in May of 1987 when a series of rapes took place in Scarborough, Ontario. During that crime spree Paul Bernardo raped 14 women but went undiscovered and the mysterious rapist was given the nickname the Scarborough Rapist by the media. In October of the same year Paul Bernardo, who was then 23, went to a hotel restaurant and met 17 year-old Karla Homolka.

Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka became engaged on Dec. 24, 1989 and it wasn't long before Paul Bernardo was back to his criminal ways. However, this time he began to get Karla Homolka involved with his crimes.

In July of 1990, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka spiked a plate of food and gave it to Karla's younger sister Tammy. Tammy passed out and and Paul Bernardo briefly raped her before she started to wake up. On Dec. 23, 1990, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka drugged Tammy again but this time they used animal tranquilizers that had been stolen from Karla Homolka's workplace. Tammy was then raped before she choked on her own vomit and died. The couple tell police that they tried to revive Tammy and her death is ruled to have been an accident.

In January of 1991, Paul Bernardo picked up a hitchhiker and brought her back to Karla Homolka's home where he raped her before dropping his victim off on the street afterwards. He took a pause for a while but then on June 14, 1991, Paul Bernardo kidnapped a 14 year-old and took her back home where both Bernardo and Karla Homolka raped and then killed the girl.

June 29, 1991 was an important day for Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Not only did the couple get married on this day but on the same day the dismembered body of the 14 year-old, Leslie Mahaffy, were found in a lake. The body had been encased in concrete.

On April 16, 1992, Karla Homolka helped Paul Bernardo kidnap Kristen French from a church parking lot. They then raped, tortured and killed the girl before leaving her dead body in a ditch. All of her hair had been cut off of her head. Her body was found on April 30, 1992.

In January of 1993 the romance between the two serial killers broke down when Paul Bernardo severely beat Karla Homolka and she left him and filed charges of assault against him. Paul Bernardo is arrested and on February 19, 1993 a search warrant was issued that allowed Paul Bernardo's home to be searched.

The search of the home took 71 days but yet the police somehow fail to find a number of video tapes that Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka had made of their victims being raped. However, on May 6, 1993, Paul Bernardo's lawyer, Ken Murray, somehow managed to get into the house and removed the tapes from their hiding place above a light fixture in the upstairs bathroom. Murray then keeps the tapes hidden for 16 months.

Karla Homolka's trial began on June 28, 1993 and she pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter. Karla Homolka plead her sentence down to 12 years and publication ban is ordered by the judge in Karla Homolka's trial in order to give a fair trial for Paul Bernardo.

In September of 1994, Ken Murray quit as Paul Bernardo's lawyer and gave the hidden tapes over to his new lawyer, John Rosen. Later that month, John Rosen turned the videos over to the police. On September 1, 1995, Paul Bernardo was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison. Paul Bernardo is kept at the Kingston Penitentiary in Kingston, Ontario in solitary confinement. On February 21, 2006, Bernardo admitted to 10 more rapes in a letter to his lawyer.

Karla Homolka was released from prison on July 4, 2005.
